The Delegates Have Won It Again! Congratulations

03 March 2012

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Year 10 and Diploma Program (DP1) students returned from the East African Model United Nations conference (EAMUN) in Nairobi with more awards than any other school. They earned four awards overall against 64 schools with a total of 1000 delegates from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia , Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sweden.

Individual award recipients included Livia Clandorf, who won the Terry Howard Award for overall best speaker, and Ali Amershi, who was named the top speaker of the Economic Committee. The AKAM team represented Azerbaijan, South Africa, Suriname and Maldives, engaging in issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to deforestation and the legitimacy of economic sanctions. The Azerbaijan team won best resolution in the Economic Committee and South African team won best resolution in the Political Committee. The Academy students were poised, articulate, knowledgeable and confident.

In the conference’s opening remarks, Mrs. Sahle-Work Zewde, Director-General of the United Nations office in Nairobi said she was pleased to see so many youths interested and active in global affairs. Students then proceeded to their committee rooms to begin debating resolutions they had previously drafted.

EAMUN is a simulated session of the General Assembly, Security Council, Ecology and Environment, Economic, Human Rights and Political committees in which students represent member countries as delegates. The program has continued to grow and evolve over the years into a successful conference that provides tremendous learning opportunities to all students taking part in it.
