Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa hosts the Old Town Youth Group Conference

21 October 2008

How many times have most of us wondered what the future entails for the future generation and the current generation?

The youth are supposedly the prospective leaders and they hold the power to make or break the future and to what extent have we ensured that this particular group of people are secured and will make it to having the ability to lead?

It is for this reason that the Student’s Representative Council of the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa and the Old Town Youth Organization, Mombasa have once again joined hands in organizing the second Youth Empowerment Conference; Old Town Youth Group Conference.

Over 100 students from 12 different schools of the province thronged into the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa to avoid missing out on any insightful knowledge available. Among others, the District Officer of Youth Affairs, Mrs. Faith Waweru was present. “I believe that the youth are the future” said Mrs. Faith at the opening ceremony whilst showing her gratitude to the organizers of the event.

The conference was sub-divided into mini conferences because of the range of problems that are faced by the Youth to date; HIV/AIDS, Peer Pressure, Knowledge of Rights of the Youth etc. which were well facilitated by volunteer experts from various organizations carrying experience as their main tool of education.

Apart from the lectures, the participants were treated to two tea breaks, morning and afternoon, and a delicious lunch served courtesy of the Aga Khan Academy’s Cafeteria Staff.

Day two of the event was a test of what the participants had gained from the conferences. Each group was expected to enlighten the other groups of what they had learnt during their seminars. The presentations were so vivid that the participants had a good grasp of knowledge and that they were ready to make a change as the expected prospective heads.

The event was aggregated by a speech from the President of the Old Town Youth Organization, Miss Fatma and final remarks from the Master of Ceremony, Harsev Oshan. Overall, the Student’s Representative Council of the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa and the Old Town Youth Organization had orchestrated great organizational and leadership skills.
