Young learners explore different cultures

16 February 2019

Students of grade 4A organised a morning assembly on Friday 8th February, presenting different cultures from India and across the world. They acknowledged the cultural diversity in their own classroom and chose to talk about their heritage. Cultures represented were Pakistani, Gujarati, South and North Indian, and American. Students wrote a rap song in music class for the assembly which was integrated within the culture unit.

Academy Junior School students learnt about how people dressed in other cultures, the languages they speak, food they have on special occasions, festivals they celebrate, their beliefs, customs, and rituals. In this assembly, stations were set up which other students visited. Students recorded the things they learnt and the things they liked about each culture. Some of them even decided to deliver their presentations in languages that are new to them like Telugu and Gujarati.

The whole assembly was designed and planned by students. Academy Junior School students are taught early on about being respectful of cultures and traditions that are different from their own. This, combined with the agency that the PYP curriculum offers them, opens up avenues for our young learners to express themselves in unique and wonderful ways.
