World Peace Day Celebrations

23 September 2019

The Academy’s Junior School commemorated the International Day of Peace with a week-full of meaningful activities, starting from Monday 16 September to Friday 20 September.

The International Day of Peace or World Peace Day is observed around the world annually on 21st September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this day devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace among all countries and peoples. And each year, the UN sets aside different themes to draw attention and create awareness with the sole objective of promoting peace throughout the world. The theme for this year was 'climate action for peace'.

Resonating the theme, the students from the Junior School were engaged in the following activities:

crèche – Little kids actively participated in removing weeds to prepare the ground for organic farming

grade 1 – Students were made aware of saving energy and decreasing the carbon footprints by making them responsible for switching off lights and fans during break times and lunchtime

grade 2 – Students took an initiative to say NO to plastics by collecting used and waste plastics from the field and other parts of the Academy

grade 3 – Students have volunteered to start organic farming

grade 4 – Compost in the form of soiled and left-over food was collected during lunchtime. The compost collection which is a part of the organic farming exercise will be used by grade 3 students in their farming.

grade 5 – Students were made aware of the mini beings that helped them in understanding the concept of interdependence.

Students marked the end of the Peace week celebrations by giving presentations of their enrolment in the peace week at the school assembly on Friday, 20th September.

The enrichment period, on the other hand, witnessed Junior School students getting divided into eleven groups. Activities like making Zen tangles, mandalas, doodling, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, nature walk, colour dabbing, poster making, writing letters to loved ones and playing board games were actively sought by them.

Engaging young children through hands-on learning experiences like these had not only taught them many valuable lessons on combating climate change but also made them conscious of optimally utilizing available resources. Preparing young and ethical leaders who are mindful, responsible, and compassion is the ultimate motto of the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad!
