Students win awards at CHIREC MUN

07 November 2017
Academy students won three awards at a Junior Model United Nations conference held on 27-29th October at CHIREC International School.

13 students from grades 6, 7 and 8 participated at the Junior MUN conference, where eight delegates contributed to the DISEC committee, two were in UNESCO, one in the European Union, one in HRC and one in Security Council. These young delegates received extensive training at the Academy for weeks leading up to the main event. The debate itself was full of well-crafted statements from the delegates and thorough discussions of some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as nuclear disarmament.

Garv Joshi of grade 6 summarized, “The best part about the MUN was the learning. The three days were filled to the brim with debates, interviews, and reacting to different scenarios. It was a lot of fun! We even had a press conference with the international press team.”

Our delegates shone in the conference, winning a total of three awards. Garv Joshi, representing Iraq in DISEC, garnered the High Commendation Award; Kaushik Palavalsa, representing Greece in DISEC, won the Special Mention Award; Alaina Hirani, representative for Belgium in DISEC, also earned a Special Mention Award. Many congratulations!

“The most important thing was learning how to speak with confidence,” reflected participant Shiza Virani of grade 6. “Everyone is excited for the upcoming AKAHMUN (Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad Model United Nations) 2017, since the MUN at CHIREC went so well.”

This year the Academy is hosting the AKAHMUN for grades 9, 10, DP1, and DP2 on 10-12 November 2017. Additionally, a mini MUN for grades 6 through 8 will take place simultaneously. The mini MUN will be chaired by DP1 and DP2 students, all of whom have extensive experience with MUN conferences. As a result, junior students will get the opportunity to learn about the Rules of Procedure under the tutelage of talented seniors.

MUN Coordinator and history faculty, Priyodarshini Das, commented, “This is a great opportunity for students to discuss global issues and to become effective, ethical leaders.”
