Peace Summit 2022

28 March 2022

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Department of Humanities organised its annual Peace Summit on 24-25 March 2022. The two-day event comprised workshops by groups of DP1 students of AKA Mombasa for MYP4 students across the Academies. And for the first time this year, four DP1 students from AKA Hyderabad had the opportunity to conduct one session alongside their counterparts in Mombasa.

Divya Jhampa a participant from Grade 9 from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad shares her experience:

On behalf of the students of Grade 9 across the Academies, we are extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to come together and attend the two-day Peace Summit Programme 2022.

During these two days, the DP1 students from Aga Khan Academy Mombasa organised and conducted various interesting and engaging activities pertaining to peace and conflict resolution which helped set the context for this summit. The ice-breaker sessions organised by the team enabled all participants to share their views in a comfortable and safe environment.

Throughout these two days, we were introduced to diverse topics ranging from the Rwanda Genocide to the degradation of the coral reefs, the Russia-Ukraine conflict to world hunger. Each topic provided meaningful facts, insights, and takeaways. We had an opportunity to understand the thought process of different individuals and groups on how they went about solving world issues that were put forward. Making us come up with solutions also enabled us to think critically about resolving given global issues.

A key takeaway was that every issue presented and discussed was extremely current and relevant in our times, and since we read about these in the newspapers or engaged with similar topics during our lessons, the summit made the sessions much more interesting and interactive. The inference from each of the sessions is that they have helped us aim for and attain a more equitable society and sustainable future.

The highlight of the programme, though, were the keynote speeches. Each speaker shared insights on bringing about peace, not only into the world but also within ourselves, and creating a non-violent environment for future generations. All in all, I felt that this programme was an enriching and enlightening experience for the entire Grade 9 and has given us a more holistic understanding of peace, conflict, and conflict resolution.
