Morag Kallepu: Supporting EAL students effectively

02 September 2022

The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad welcomed new staff members from around the world for the 2022-2023 academic year. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will feature profiles of the new staff, introducing who they are and how they want to bring change to the Academy.

Morag Kallepu has joined us from Aberdeen, Scotland as an English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher. She studied International Relations at the University of Edinburgh and went on to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education to become a humanities teacher. She later specialised in Support for Learning as a Principal Teacher of Pupil Support where she worked to ensure that all children’s academic, behavioural and social/ emotional needs were met. After completing a Teaching English as a Foreign Language course, Morag accepted the role of EAL Teacher at the Academy.

“I joined the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad because I saw a unique opportunity to work in a pluralistic setting with young people from a diverse range of backgrounds,” says Morag. “I love that the Academy focuses on teaching skills young people will use for the rest of their lives, rather than solely on curriculum content. I became a teacher to help young people find joy in learning and become inquisitive, well-rounded, critical thinkers ready to take on any challenge. The Academy’s mission to empower exceptional young people to become ethical and compassionate future leaders aligns with my own values. The beautiful 100-acre campus was also a bonus!”

Morag says that she looks forward to working within the Learning Enrichment Department to help young people develop their language skills and find strategies to improve their learning. “I aim to work collaboratively with my colleagues to ensure all young people have an equitable opportunity to succeed and reach their own potential at the Academy.”

“My first priority is to get to know my students well, build positive relationships with them and understand their learning styles so I can make our lessons relevant and engaging. By supporting students improve their reading, writing, talking and listening skills in English, I hope to remove any barriers to their learning and allow them to communicate and connect freely.”
