05 December 2016

KITE 2017, Telangana International Kite Festival is a two-day family fun festival celebrating Sankranthi on 14–15 January 2017, aiming to support the tourism profile and rich cultural heritage of Hyderabad as a hidden jewel of India. KITE 2017 will take place at the breathtaking 100-acre campus of the Aga Khan Academy and expects a footfall of 20-25,000 visitors.

The Telangana State Government Department of Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture and Incredible India are joining hands with the Aga Khan Academy to profile and celebrate the longstanding regional tradition of kite flying and the unique culture, crafts and cuisine of Telangana through an exciting festival program for schools, children, families and kite-flying enthusiasts of all ages. KITE 2016 attracted a footfall of close to 7,000 visitors earlier this year.

Key festival collaborators include Royal Kite Flyers Club of India whose president has joined the festival committee, bringing kite expertise and knowledge to KITE 2017. International teams from 50 countries have been approached. A pool of talented international kite flyers will join with local and pan-Indian kite club competitors to provide electrifying demonstrations for all participants over two days of kite flying. As a prelude to the festival, kite flying displays will take place around the city on Thursday, 12 January.

An inclusive, pre-festival, dedicated schools programme is scheduled for Friday, 13 January that will bring students from government and private schools together for workshops on kite making, paper craft, origami, quilling as well as presentations and exhibitions on the history of kites.

KITE 2017 is a festival with a difference. Its partners are committed to the social cause of raising awareness of the importance of education and empowerment of girl children. Through its contributing partners, KITE aspires to build solidarity around this critical issue and generate opportunities for gifted girl children from the lower socio-economic bracket by providing access to a world-class education. A grand opening cause concert and fundraising dinner are planned around this theme.

KITE 2017 is a two-day ticketed event. Registrations for festival passes are available online through BookMyShow. For any information, enquiries and advance school reservations, please contact the KITE 2017 festival office on the details given below.
