Strengthening learning through sports: the Academy introduces athletics programme

06 October 2025

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka launched its inaugural athleticprogramme, marking an important step in strengthening opportunities for students to learn and grow through sports

Long valued as an integral part of education, athletics teaches students lessons in discipline, resilience, leadership and teamworkwhich extends well beyond the field of play. With this new initiative, students will now experience a structured pathway to pursue their sporting interests while developing essential life skills.

The programme offers six sports – football, basketball, volleyball, cricket, table tennis and track and field. These sports were chosen for their ability to challenge students individuallyhelp them discover their strengths and encourage collaboration, mutual respect, and a healthy balance between mind and body

Alongside this, the Academy in Dhaka has invested in high-quality facilities, including a football pitch, cricket nets, basketball and volleyball courts, and indoor spaces for table tennis. These facilities provide an environment where students can train with purpose, compete confidently and explore their potential.

Athletics at the Academy goes beyond competition, nurturing community spirit, strengthening friendships and instilling the values of perseverance and fair play. On the court, pitch or track, students will be supported in reaching new heightswhile also uplifting one another embodying the ethos of unity and compassion underpinning the Academy’s mission.

I strongly believe that children must understand the importance of physical activity,” said Mr Amit Ahire, Lead PHE Teacher and Wellness Coordinator. Even the simplest movements can make a big differenceto our health. Physical activity, along with balanced nutrition and sunlight, builds the foundation for overall well-being. Beyond fitness, these habits also nurture social, emotional and intellectual growth, reminding us that well-being is about the whole person, not just the body.”

The programme has already sparked enthusiasm across the Academy. Students are eager to try new sports and attend training sessions and have taken pride in the chance to represent their school in sporting events. More than competition, these experiences are shaping confident learners who view health and activity as lifelong values.

Looking ahead, the athletics programmeaims to raise the Academy’s sporting profile and inspire a culture of well-being and resilience. Whether through team victories, personal milestones or the daily discipline of practice, students are encouraged to see sport as an avenue for growth, balance and joy. The Academy remains proud to champion a vision of education where athletics play a vital role in developing balanced, compassionate and future-ready leaders.
