From aspiration to admission: Aga Khan Academy Dhaka’s approach to university readiness
Choosing the right university can be one of the most defining decisions in a young person’s life. At the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka, the University Counselling Office guides and supports students through personalised mentorship, engaging university fairs and interactive sessions with international representatives. Through these activities, students gain the knowledge and confidence to explore higher education options that align with their academic interests, personal strengths and long-term aspirations.
“University visits bring a wealth of knowledge and up-to-date information to our students,” University Counsellor Ms Nusrat Sharmin said. “Visiting representatives engage in one-on-one interactions, providing valuable insights into the application process, scholarship opportunities and student life.”
During the recent sessions, the Academy’s Senior School library buzzed with excitement as students explored booths, asked questions and compared study options across countries. For many, these first interactions with global universities were moments of discovery – sparking ambition and opening new horizons.
This month, representatives from the University of Manchester, Arizona State University, York University and the University of Toronto engaged with Diploma Programme (DP) students, providing first-hand insight into admissions, academic life and scholarships. These conversations helped students better understand what makes each institution a potential fit to pursue their goals and aspirations.
“Each of these universities follows a distinct application process and offers unique research opportunities,” Ms Nusrat said. “Our students not only gain comprehensive information about admissions and scholarships but also learn how to position their IB experience effectively.”
As well as international universities, the Academy also encourages students to explore opportunities within Bangladesh. Last month, DP1 students visited BRAC University’s Residential Campus for an interactive programme that offered a first-hand look at higher education in the local context. Through workshops, discussions and campus activities, students experienced how national universities foster innovation, collaboration and community engagement.
For DP1 students, such experiences offer an inspiring introduction to the world of higher education and encourage them to begin thinking about future goals. For DP2 students, approaching key application deadlines, one-on-one counselling and university fairs provide essential support in refining choices and preparing strong, well-informed applications.
The success of the Academy’s university readiness initiatives is reflected in the outcomes of its recent graduating cohorts. The Class of 2024 achieved an impressive average score of 34.7 in the IB DP, surpassing the global average of 30.3, with a 99% pass rate.
Graduates received over USD 3.9 million in scholarship offers from renowned universities worldwide, including King’s College London, McGill University, Michigan State University and the University of Texas at Austin.
Similarly, the Class of 2025 achieved a 97% pass rate and earned more than USD 2 million in scholarships, securing admissions at leading institutions such as the University of Manchester, the National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong.
These achievements highlight the Academy’s commitment to developing well-rounded learners who pursue excellence with purpose and integrity. At the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka, university readiness is not an endpoint but a beginning – one that reflects our belief that education should empower students to lead with knowledge, compassion and confidence wherever their journeys take them.
Students and parents can learn more about university preparation through the Aga Khan Schools University Counselling Handbook, which offers practical guidance, timelines and tips for DP1 and DP2 students. The handbook can be accessed here.
