10 May 2011

The Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, last week awarded certificates to a total of 19 educators and school leaders who completed the programme in educational leadership offered by the Institute for Educational Development, Aga Khan University.

The programme is supported by the Ministry of Education and was run in partnership with the Faculty of Education at Eduardo Mondlane University and the Institute of Teacher Training in Matola.

The Certificate in Educational Leadership is a specialized programme for school leaders focused on developing leadership skills in teaching and learning and effective classroom practice.

Its key aims are to foster in each participant a capacity for improved school leadership, as well as a capacity for pedagogical leadership, which, in turn, facilitate teacher and student learning within a collaborative culture and environment. In particular, the course helps participants develop skills for successful planning and implementation of school improvement initiatives.

According to the Ambassador of the Aga Khan Development Network, Nazim Ahmad, graduates will play an important role and a positive catalyst to the schools where they work. "I thank the Ministry of Education for their fruitful collaboration and at the same time I congratulate the group of directors who have successfully completed this important leadership training," said Ahmad.

The Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, is part of a network of 18 residential schools located throughout Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East and will open its doors to students in 2013 and expects to offer opportunities to gifted and talented children of Mozambique, regardless of their parents’ ability to pay.

The certificates were presented by the Director of Education in Maputo Province, Fernando Lucas, who appealed to teachers to implement in their day-to-day work, the skills they've acquired. "Your name will be inscribed with golden letters in the annals of the history of your province, because you are pioneers of management training, promoted by the Aga Khan Development Network," Lucas Fernando pointed out.

The certificate ceremony was also attended by the National Deputy Director for Teacher Training, from the Ministry of Education, Joaquim Matavele.
