AKA Maputo Students Commemorate the International Day of Peace 2019

21 September 2019

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

This year, our AKA Maputo Grade 9 students (with Mr. Bernardo) collaborated to organise an assembly for the whole school, to help students define the meaning of peace across many different languages from around the world.

During the assembly, students were asked what peace means to them. For some:

'Peace is a day when there is no war, a day when everyone is united and together.'

'Peace means love to me.'

‘Peace means love, it means stopping conflict and it means we should hope.’

‘Peace is when the country is calm.’

‘Peace for me is the answer to stopping destruction around the world.’

As well as this inspiring assembly, Grade 9 students also arranged several activities for PYP and MYP students, making pledges and gathering together to participate a peace picnic – during which many students made friends with people of different ages and enjoyed some delicious food of course!

We congratulate our Grade 9 students and our entire community for coming together to, in the words of John Lennon,  'give peace a chance'.
