AKA Maputo hosts basketball camp

10 May 2022

On Saturday, 7 May the Aga Khan Academy Maputo hosted a basketball camp – Campo de Desenvolvimento António Azevedo and Hernani Mussa – for 60 students between 14 and 17 years of age from schools around Mozambique, including seven students from the Academy. The one-day camp aims to strengthen students' basketball skills and expose them to comprehensive training improving their life and technical skills that are needed for basketball. Trained by national and international coaches, students and staff gain a lot from this experience. Below, we hear from Grade 10 student Hollis Massuanganhe, who participated in the basketball camp, and Wassim Muhammad Alhammwy, a Physical Education (PE) coach at the Academy who also took part in the camp.

"The basketball training event was a very fun and wholesome experience for me. Basketball is a sport I love doing, and being able to meet other people that also share the same love for the sport in this event really made me happy. The training and the whole programme was very organised, from the moment I arrived and to the ending of the programme. The coaches were all very supportive and helped us to do our best, and we further more pushed ourselves to show our best abilities in court. There were also some off-court activities that I really liked, such as when we had a session with a wild life vet I really enjoyed the session and it was a pleasant experience. There was another off-court activity where we were all in the library and doing music with our body. We also did some traditional games and it was very fun. I really enjoyed and loved the basketball training day, and I hope that there are more opportunities for days like this."

Wassim Muhammad Alhammwy, PE coach

During one day that extended from morning to afternoon, 60 teenage boys and girls came together at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, united by a love of basketball. But in reality, what united them was more than a small ball, it was the brotherhood and sisterhood. Since the morning and before the arrival of the participants who were selected from different regions of Mozambique, there was a distinguished organising team working on preparing the Academy's multi-purpose hall to be a place for training. In addition to the training, the students were also taught important values by the trainers, such as the importance of raising awareness on environmental issues and how to find real solutions. In short, this programme was a wonderful opportunity for students who love basketball – it really brought them a sense of happiness."
