Meet Beatrice Mecha, English language and literature teacher

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa welcomed new members of staff from around the world for the 2022-2023 academic year. Over the next few weeks, profiles of the new staff will be shown, introducing who they are and how they hope to uphold the mission and vision of the Academy.

Internship Fair

During the summer break, students at AKA Mombasa had the opportunity to intern at various organisations as part of the Internship Programme, which provides students in DP1 meaningful and sustainable career-oriented opportunities in professional fields of their choice. The Internship Fair, set up in a speed-dating style, allowed students to engage in discussion and reflection on the internship journey.

Literacy Month in Junior School

During the month of September, the entire Junior School community was engaged in a range of activities to celebrate Literacy Month. All activities were aimed at encouraging students to spend more time reading and writing as a way of exploring the world, expressing their thoughts and most importantly having fun. Activities included dual-language inter-house spelling bees and read-aloud sessions.

International Beach Clean-Up Day by Ocean Eyes

In honour of International Coastal Cleanup Day, 20 students from the Academy, some of who are a part of Ocean Eyes – a student-led service project focusing on marine conservation projects in Mombasa – participated in a beach cleanup at Kuruwitu beach. Along with cleaning up the beach, Ocean Eyes hoped to also raise awareness on the importance of marine conservation and collaborating with local partners.

Floodlights launched with an explosion of colour

On the evening of September 9 the residential community held Colour Run to celebrate the launch of the new floodlights in the field. The floodlights increase the area available for sports and residential activities such as bucketball and capture the flag to take in the evening.

AKA Mombasa swimming team qualifies for National championships

The AKA Mombasa swimming team participated in the Coast region swimming competition held last month. The entire team qualified for the Kenya Nationals taking place in Nakuru later this month.

AKA Mombasa student wins Dr Siva Kumari MYP Innovators’ Grant

Diploma Programme 1 student Arya Abdul received the Dr Siva Kumari MYP Student Innovators’ Grant for her project “A Step Forward”, in which she built an easily accessible, environmentally friendly walker. The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is the only International Baccalaureate (IB) school in Africa to have students receive this grant every year since its inception in 2019.

Grade 1 students enjoying school

We welcomed a new class of Grade 1 students into our Junior School this August. They are enjoying their classes and reading, singing, dancing, doing math and sports. Read more from the students.

Our diverse student body grows!

As with every new academic year, we welcomed many new students from many new places to our AKA Mombasa community. Students joined us from various schools around Kenya including Braeburn and Strathmore and from various countries within East Africa and around the world. The one thing they all have in common is that they love being at AKA Mombasa! Some of them tell us what they love about the Academy.
