Enrichment Programmes

Enrichment programmes enable students to realise their potential in a variety of settings beyond the classroom. They strive to develop students’ self-awareness, their awareness of school and community needs and opportunities, and to learn how to apply their gifts and skills to make an impact.

The enrichment programmes are clustered into three main streams, each with a different focus and experiential learning opportunity.

Expression

Creative expression, whether through visual or performing arts, engages students to think creatively and express their identities and thoughts aesthetically. Through theatre, art, music and drama, students learn to work together and infuse their projects with the values and lessons from other parts of their schooling. Individual and collaborative creative projects emphasise growth and development through personal challenge, ultimately resulting in achievable personal goals.

Action

The student as a reflective practitioner is a basic tenet of the action cluster. Through physical sport – both competitive and non-competitive – students are challenged in their physical growth, and learn values such as good sportsmanship, teamwork and ethical behaviour. They are encouraged to extend themselves by trying different activities and working with teammates to pass on their knowledge. In line with developing the student as a whole, a healthy lifestyle complements and enhances academic achievement.

Citizenship

The Academies align themselves with a student profile and curriculum that encourage knowledge and understanding of humanity and civil society.

Through their involvement in civic activities, students gain an understanding of the practical implications of their work and study.

By collaborating with community groups on sustainable projects, they gain an appreciation for human rights, human dignity, and of how their actions impact the world around them.

About the Academy

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is an International Baccalaureate World School. It is the first in the network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan. 

The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff.

Faculty Development

Promoting excellence in teaching, both on campus and more broadly, is a fundamental goal of the Aga Khan Academies. 

The effort to establish a Professional Development Centre (PDC) at each Academy is one of the outstanding features of the network. The PDC aims to strengthen the profession of teaching in the region by providing substantial professional learning opportunities and modelling highly effective educational practice.

Developing strength in teaching

The Academies aim to identify and develop teachers of the highest quality who are committed to both the all-round development of young people and to their own professional excellence. The Academy PDCs support excellence by striving to model best practices in teaching and learning within all of its classes and by providing high quality development opportunities for all Academy teachers.

Faculty members are also enriched by opportunities to work collaboratively with more experienced colleagues from around the globe and to teach abroad within the Aga Khan Academies network. 

Investing in teachers

In addition to a broad programme of professional development for faculty and staff, the Academy PDCs offer substantial programmes under their Professional Learning for Educators Series (PLES) for teachers in local government, independent and not-for profit schools. 

The PLES programmes are specifically designed by the Aga Khan Academies to respond to the needs of teachers, as identified through extensive market research and dialogue with government officials and education departments.

The series includes programmes for teachers in various subject areas as well as specialised programmes focussing on the skills and capabilities required for effective teaching.

Each programme builds professional competence by focussing equally on enhancing teachers’ subject knowledge and on how best to teach that subject. Each provides participants with a balance of intensive facilitated learning activities followed by an extended period of assisted application and observation within the context of their own classrooms.

Middle Years Programme

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is authorised by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students in years 6–10. 

The Academy is the only school in Mombasa and one of two in Kenya to offer the full range of IB programmes from year 1 to university entrance. We offer the IB Middle Years Programme as part of an integrated curriculum that includes the Primary Years Programme (years 1–5) and the Diploma Programme (years 11–12).

The MYP covers a study of the major disciplines, including:

  • Mathematics
  • Arts 
  • Technology
  • Physical education 

The five Aga Khan Curricular Strands, which are unique to the Aga Khan Academies, are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Learning through the MYP

Our MYP students are immersed in a challenging and enriching educational environment. We ensure that they master basic skills, develop the ability to analyse and think critically, and become computer literate. We also emphasise the development of self-discipline and good work habits. 


The programme encourages students to reflect on their learning and make connections with real world issues. It also helps students develop an awareness of their thought processes and learning strategies, and of how they learn best.

The MYP includes a service component that makes students aware of community and global needs. We also ensure that each student receives a strong leadership experience and grounding in ethics, which helps prepare them for future leadership roles. The final performance of our MYP students is assessed by teams of teachers and is validated by the IB through a monitoring process that ensures the high standards of IB schools worldwide.

The Aga Khan Academy Curricular Strands

The Aga Khan Academy Curricular Strands are a unique part of the programme offered by the Aga Khan Academies. The strands are areas of learning aimed specifically at developing knowledge, skills and attitudes required by future leaders.

Our goal at the Academies is to develop young people who have strong local roots and are also globally minded. They should be able to become leaders in whichever fields they choose.

To help achieve this goal, we have identified five areas of learning, or strands, that we believe are important for our students. These are:

  • Ethics
  • Pluralism
  • Economics for Development
  • Cultures (including Muslim Cultures)
  • Governance and Civil Society.

Implementing the Strands

The strands are not taught as independent subjects. Instead, we weave them into the existing subject areas of the academic curriculum. They help inform the selection of content and themes for study. The strands also provide direction for school life outside the classroom in areas such as policy making, recruitment, student life and residential life.

Two of the strands, Ethics and Pluralism, help students develop values and dispositions required by ethical leaders. Our students learn about these areas in theory and are also encouraged to practice what they learn in their everyday lives.

Through the other three strands, our students learn about ideas that are important to the functioning of societies. In particular, they learn about how these ideas impact people’s lives in countries of the developing world. The knowledge they gain helps them understand key issues from both local and international perspectives.

The Strands in Practice

The strands were developed at the first Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa and are designed to be used in different cultural contexts. Teachers from the Aga Khan Academy, Dar-es-Salaam will help tailor the strands for the local environment in Tanzania.

Through the strands, our students develop attitudes and values that will help them throughout their lives. They also gain knowledge and understanding that will allow them to contribute positively to their societies in the future.

Sazil Ramani – an ‘Academy advocate’ for service and social change

“For me, the best part of school is when we have service class, because I am very keen on serving my society and helping the community around me develop faster.”

Sazil joined the Academy at its inception in 2011 and has since discovered many passions and predilections. “After coming here, I realized that I have a talent for photography, and am pretty good at design too. This year, I got to not only act in the annual summer productions as part of our drama class but also designed the posters and brochures. The Academy has given me many opportunities to prove myself, and I am sure this will help me in choosing a career in the future.”

His favourite subject is science, because he likes discovering new things, especially with regard to the realities of life and our surroundings. In particular, he enjoys scientific pursuits because they provide appropriate evidence to back the claims they make, and this makes it possible to persuade others towards positive social, economic and political change. Sazil aspires to be a mechanical engineer.

“As I am a residential student, I get a lot of opportunities to experience different aspects of life at the Academy,” says Sazil. “What I find most unique is the studious and peaceful environment, the greenery around us, the people from different backgrounds and cultures living with us, the facilities provided and the number of opportunities we get to prove our talents.”

Sazil’s biggest role model is His Highness the Aga Khan. “His hard work and dedication, his vision of a better world and his mission to improve the quality of life of those less fortunate. I have a similar vision and that’s why he inspires me.”
