Year 1 Open House

09 February 2015

The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa held a Year 1 Open House on Wednesday 4th February, 2015 for potential students and parents looking to enroll their children at the beginning of the next academic year.

The day started off with a lively Junior School assembly, held for the benefit of our special guests, full of performances from various year groups and reflections from Junior School students about the time they had spent so far at the Academy.

The assembly was followed by a school tour for the parents, led by student ambassadors, and accompanied by parent volunteers who were available to answer any specific questions or concerns the visiting parents might have had. In the meantime, their children joined our current Year 1s to spend some time in class and get a taste of what a typical day in Year 1 at the Academy might feel like.

The visiting parents also had an information session, where Isla Gordon, the Junior School Principal and Rukiya Cochu, the PYP Coordinator, took them through the curriculum, the dual language programme and other particulars about the school. This session was geared towards addressing the goals that parents have for their children and how we can adapt our education to meet those increasingly non-specific demands for our graduates to adjust to a rapidly changing and unpredictable environment.

They were also given the benefit of seeing what a potential graduate of the Academy might look like, as they were addressed by Joshua Ekirikubinza and Elsie Chemelil, current DP2 students and Student Representative Council Co-Presidents. Joshua and Elsie shared their respective experiences as students of the Academy, and related their goals for the future after their graduation.

In addition, Azmina Jamal, the current Chairperson for the Parents Association, also shared her experience as a parent at the Academy, and talked a little bit about how the Academy has been valuable in supporting and shaping her daughters.

The day culminated in an informal information session where the parents were free to mingle with Junior School staff and parent volunteers to ask for any more information. We were pleased to receive a healthy turn-out of interested students and parents, and we look forward to welcoming all our new Year 1s in a few months!
