Welcome back to campus!

01 September 2021

Following the announcement made by President Filipe Nyusi on 27 August 2021, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo officially welcomed back its students to campus for in-person learning.

“We are, indeed, very excited and pleased to be welcoming our students back today,” said Head of Academy Michael Spencer. “I would like to express my gratitude to everyone including students, parents and staff for their continuous support and patience during these uncertain times as this has enabled us to prepare the Academy for a safe return of students.

Dean of Studies and Interim Senior School Principal Alejandro Zepeda echoed the Head of Academy's sentiment on the reopening of the campus, whilst also looking forward to the future where all students and staff can be together on campus again.

"We are all very excited to have students back on campus. We will be making the most out of face-to-face education while still following health and safety recommendations. Students mentioned that they are very happy to be back with their teachers and classmates. To those students still abroad and waiting for visas, we tell them that we will continue to support their online learning and eagerly wait for their arrival."

The re-opening of the Academy has taken place in a phased manner that complies with COVID-related protocols. All students and staff members must have their temperatures taken and hands sanitised upon arrival. In addition to this, parents and guardians must remain in their vehicles at all times when dropping students off, with physical distancing measures being put in place around the Academy. “We have been extremely busy preparing classrooms and the campus for the return of the students,” Mr Spencer said.

Although the students had started the new academic year through online learning, they are now able to enjoy and experience the Academy’s new buildings and facilities. “The campus has changed quite a lot,” said Diploma Programme 1 student Shahid Neves. “Given that the Academy grew from merely one building, it is both overwhelming and exciting to see where we are now.”
