Onam Assembly

10 September 2014

The Junior School celebrated Onam, the famous festival of the state of Kerala, in the morning assembly on Tuesday 9 September. The stage was decorated with a circular pattern made of multi coloured flowers, called the "Pookalam.”

The assembly started off with Mr Suresh and Ms Seena greeting the Junior School students and teachers in Malayalam. Mr Suresh spoke about the different aspects of the festival; although of Hindu origin, people of all religions in Kerala celebrate Onam. This harvest festival lasts for ten days and culminates on the tenth day when families and friends get together to partake in a lavish feast called the "sadhya."

The day is also marked by the women performing a dance around the Pookalam. Students from Grade 4A were dressed in traditional Kerala attire and performed a beautiful "kaikottikali," which held the audience in rapt attention. Several of the teachers were also dressed in traditional off-white Kerala saris.

The atmosphere was one of festivity and cheer, and the students and staff of the Junior School learned about yet another festival of India.
