Student Leadership

The Academies’ programmes aim to develop students who are ethical, public-minded and who possess a pluralistic outlook. Both curricular and enrichment activities work to educate effective home-grown leaders who are actively engaged in their local communities and are aware of the implications of their actions.

Through their participation in enrichment programmes, students are encouraged to take on leadership positions in a variety of different forms (e.g. house leaders, student council, team captains, dorm duties).

Not only do these opportunities provide an environment to explore and enhance skills such as cooperation and problem solving, they also enable students to set personal goals and challenge themselves.

"The conviction that home-grown intellectual leadership of exceptional calibre is the best driver of a society’s destiny, underpins the Ismaili Imamat’s endeavour to create catalytic centres of educational excellence."His Highness the Aga Khan (Matola, June 2004)

Middle Years

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka is a Candidate School* for the Middle Years Programme. This Academy is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education that the AKA Dhaka believes is important for our students. *Only schools authorised by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.orgOur Middle Years curriculum for students in Grades 6–10 is part of an integrated curriculum that forms a continuum from the Primary Years (Grades 1-5) to the Diploma (Grades 11-12).

Students study a broad and balanced range of disciplines, including:

  • languages
  • literature
  • sciences
  • social sciences
  • mathematics
  • arts
  • technology
  • physical education.

The five Aga Khan Curricular Strands, which are unique to the Aga Khan Academies, are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Learning in the middle years

Our Middle Years students are immersed in a challenging and enriching educational environment. We ensure they master basic skills, develop the ability to analyse and think critically, and become computer literate. We also emphasise the development of self-discipline and good work habits.

The programme encourages students to reflect on their learning and make connections with real world issues. It also helps students develop an awareness of their thought processes and learning strategies, and of how they learn best.

The curriculum includes a service component that makes students aware of community and global needs. We also ensure that each student has a strong leadership experience and receives grounding in ethics, which helps prepare them for future leadership roles.

For further information about applying to Grades 6-10 at the Academy, please see the admission requirements.
