Service as Action creates valuable impact

22 November 2022

Service as Action is an essential element of the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme. It strives to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the environment by developing caring community members. Students are encouraged to make a valuable impact on their local communities by participating in service and action programmes. Student involvement in such activities teaches them the value of community participation and gives them a deeper understanding of the issues affecting their immediate environment.

An event allowing students to display service and action took place at the Academy on Friday, 18 of November 2022. An estimated 90 students from the Mahatma Jyothiba Pule Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Residential School arrived at our campus. Grade 9 and 10 students were divided into groups according to their sports preferences. They devised strategies for teaching the children sports without allowing language to hinder their learning.

Mihika Das Gupta in Grade 10 reflects on her experience

This was my first Service as Action activity at the Academy and it truly was an eye-opening experience. Making a meaningful contribution to the lives of people around me has always been a priority in my value system. I find whenever I participate in service projects they, just like this Friday, become a reminder of all the blessings I have in my life. I often take things for granted, but days like this are a reminder. I was grateful for everything I had, from my family and friends to be able to receive a quality education.

To make this a day the children will never forget, I wanted to do my best to make it engaging for them. I was a member of the team teaching roughly 11 kids to play table tennis. I was astounded by how rapidly they picked up the skill! In about 10 minutes, they mastered a new sport. Since we wanted them to enjoy themselves while using the equipment to play the sport, we taught them the fundamentals of it. What ensued was an hour of spirited play and lots of shared laughter with newly found peers. The varied backgrounds we all came from faded away in the face of the joy of learning and playing together.

I had a greatly meaningful time and am looking forward to interacting with children from varied backgrounds in the near future. I am hopeful that many more opportunities for service and action will come our way so we can work towards having a substantial impact on the lives of these children as the community of the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad!
