09 June 2022

Theodore John (TJ) Coburn was born in the United States of America and is the founding head of Academy at the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka. TJ spent the first 10 years of his career in investment banking, ascending to top leadership roles at Merrill Lynch and Prudential Securities. Leaving Wall Street, TJ completed graduate programmes in divinity, counseling psychology and cognitive development at Harvard University to serve in various educational settings. He has worked in inner-city schools serving communities with diverse socio-economic backgrounds in New York City and Boston. In his decorated career, TJ has led international schools in New York City, Poland and Bangladesh.

Through his position, TJ aims to achieve the mission and vision of the Aga Khan Academies by being an open-minded and ethical leader.

“I am working alongside a great team to launch the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka successfully, and planning to position ourselves as a unique educational institution that relentlessly strives for excellence,” TJ said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and I hope to create a rewarding experience for everyone here at the Academy.”

TJ said he is elated to be a part of the launch and grateful for the work ahead.

“Founding a school is a unique and special time in the lifetime of that school,” TJ said. “And I am confident that together we will build a truly remarkable institution that will produce Bangladesh’s next generation of ethical, pluralistic leaders.”
