Residential Students Celebrate their One Year Anniversary!

19 April 2010

April 17, 2010 marked the one year anniversary of the residential programme at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa. To celebrate, the residential community organized an evening of entertainment and reflection. Preparations began weeks in advance, with our Dorm Captains, Becky, Shezin, Varun and Rishad, taking the lead. As the date came closer, other senior students took on leadership roles, including Maria, Nausheen and Soraiya. Students were asked to prepare  performances they wished to share with the community, including singing, dancing, dramatical performances and reflections.

The evening began with a delicious nyama-choma style dinner, prepared by our talented canteen staff. During the meal, students viewed a slide-show put together by Aabid, Bevertone and Alykhan, showing us all of the great times we have had together. After cutting a celebratory cake in honour of Zakir and Farhana who missed their birthday celebrations because of the Easter holidays, we proceeded to the Multi-Purpose Hall. A wreath made of palm-leaves decorated the entrance as we entered the hall, made by the skill-full hands of James and Maxwin.

Led by our MCs, Shezin and Rishad, the programme opened with an introductory address by the Dean of Students, Naheed Bardai, and by the Dorm Masters, Nancy Oruko and Aziz Batada. Vanessa in Year 8 got the entertainment started with a beautiful song, accompanied by Mr. Onyango on the piano. Rachael and Pauline followed suit with a duet. Then, Mordecai and Ikhwan showcased their football skills with some fancy footwork. Shivam, Tulsi, Aadil, Ikhwan and Yasin gave us a laugh with a creative dramatical performance. Becky, Ilma, Gillian, Moira and Dhruvi then shared their reflections and thoughts about boarding life thus far. Mary continued with the entertainment with a solo singing  performance, followed by Kelvin, Asterix and Nestor demonstrating their jump-rope abilities. Christine, Zainab, Victoria and Mary then gave us a thoughtful dramatic piece about living in a quad. Tulsi and Dhruvi followed with a dance, proceeded by Alykhan, Sadiq, Rahim and Bevertone performing a stand-up comedy routine. Fidel, Asterix, Blaise, Joseph and Brian then shared a poem written by Mother Theresa. Iddi, William and Varun shared their reflections about dorm life, followed by a dance performed by Rachael, Grace and Senze. Terry and Flora then performed an instrumental piece on the piano and clarinet respectively. The entertainment was rounded-off by two more dances, the first by Xenia and Karen, and the second by Xenia and Khalid. From there, the community ended the night with some dancing and late-night snacking.

This night was only possible because of the hard work and organization of students and Dorm Parents. Parents, we also paused for a moment to think about you and the all the tremendous things you do. Thank you for all your support!
