Roots, shoots and muddy boots

26 February 2015

The Grade 1 children already had an understanding about habitats from their Really Wild unit and their new learning was focused on using their scientific knowledge. They learnt about seeds, plants, growing mediums, prediction, recording, analysis and repeating experiments to prove findings.

Part of this unit involved looking in detail at plants and flowers.

The children started drawing what they saw. Although beautiful they lacked detail.

At the end of the unit they repeated the process.

The learning was clear to see.

The children were able to show in depth knowledge showing roots, stem, veins, leaves, sepals, ovaries, anthers, filaments and pollen. What a difference! They learnt about Bilbao trees, and the wonder of the Wishing Tree in Hong Kong.
