PDC Award Ceremony at AKA, Maputo

08 April 2015

A ceremony was held at the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, on 28 March 2015 to celebrate the awarding of the Professional Development Centre (PDC) course completion certificates. Mrs Salmina Alexandre was the guest of honour at the ceremony, representing the Provincial Director of District Education and Culture in Maputo.

The ceremony recognised a group of 17 head teachers and pedagogical leaders who have been attending a certificate course in Educational Leadership and Management. The course includes 30 monthly seminars and workshops offered by the Academy's Professional Development Centre in partnership with the District Education Offices in Matola and Boane.

In her speech, Mrs Alexandre highlighted the initiatives being implemented by the Academy in Maputo province. She said, "It gives us much pleasure to witness the certification of this group of head teachers and teachers by the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, and we acknowledge the efforts and critical role played by the Academy in the capacity building of educators in Maputo province. We would like to challenge the head teachers to implement good practices in leadership in your schools: ‘Open communication channels and get the most of your teachers’."

One of the distinguishing features of the Aga Khan Academies is the provision of high quality professional development programmes for educators focusing on subject content acquisition, general pedagogical skills, interactive learning techniques and student-centred teaching methodologies. These interventions are aligned with the strategic plan of Mozambique's Ministry of Education (2012-2016), which highlights the need for improvement in the quality of education in the country through reforms in the teacher training system, and fostering of the monitoring and evaluation of learners' performance and school management systems.
