Pi Day

23 March 2015

March 14 is celebrated as Pi Day throughout the world, because the approximate value of pi is 3.141519…. This year, it was more significant as the date was 14/03/15, corresponding to a greater number of digits of pi. The Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad students also participated in the celebration of Pi Day.

Students in Grade 9 gave a presentation about the history, uses and significance of pi in real life. Students in grades 7 and 8 worked on making posters about pi. The students came up with creative ways to remember the digits of pi in its decimal representation. Ayaaz Pujani from grade 8 recited the value of pi up to 47 decimal points, which was quite remarkable. At the same time, students in grades 9 and 10 worked on Tarsia activity solutions. They found the circumference of the circle in their own ways. Students got to understand that the ratio is approximately equal to 3.14 (pi).

After the activities, the students participated in a mathematics quiz competition. There were six teams named after the mathematicians Ramanujan, Archimedes, Pythagoras, Euclid, Euler and Aryabhatta. The students were quite excited and enthusiastically participated in the quiz.
