Academy educators invited to participate in IBO Arts Basecamp

01 November 2017
MYP Coordinator Meenakshi Joshi and Arts faculty Vijayaraghavan Srinivasan of the Academy were selected for the IBO’s Arts curriculum development team.

The International Baccalaureate Organization recently called for art teachers to contribute to the next round of curriculum development for the Arts subject group. Meenakshi, MYP Coordinator for the Academy, was excited for the opportunity. “I felt the experience would expose me to new practices, opinions, and ideas that are being developed in the curriculum,” she stated. She is now working with a group of teachers to develop the MYP Arts guide. In doing so, the team will ensure that it serves its purpose of guiding teachers in the creation of quality arts programming for grades 6-10.

The collaboration between teachers is taking place through an online discussion group, which began in September of this year. “The discussions are very productive. I am excited about further development of the Arts in the MYP,” affirmed Meenakshi.

Vijayaraghavan, Arts teacher at the Academy and IB Examiner for Visual Arts, is equally enthusiastic about his new role. “It’s a great privilege to be a part of the IBO Basecamp MYP curriculum development team and its online consultation program.”

There are three phases in the process. First, contributors review the guide, participants make recommendations and revisions, and then they will present their findings at a meeting in The Hague in November. Secondly, a follow-up meeting will take place in January 2018 to refine proposed revisions of the guide. Thirdly, another meeting will be organised to identify ways in which teachers can be supported to create quality programmes using the Arts guide.

“It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with diverse senior Arts faculty, artists, musicians, and theatre personalities from across the country,” summarizes Vijayaraghavan.

Congrats, Meenakshi and Vijayaraghavan!
